DSLR Modelling - Solidworks and Keyshot
Testing out some surface modelling techniques in Solidworks, and the Keyshot rendering program. This model is a copy of my Canon Eos 550D / T2i camera. Check out the 3d-PDF to spin the model around and check out all the details.
East Timor - Coconut grinder, coffee press, tai boxes
I was recently hired to design a series of products to demonstrate the potential value of design education to those living in East Timor. The country is one of the poorest in the world, and has had trouble generating entrepreneurship and steady development while also recovering from civil war. Working for a group composed of United Nations employees and people from Griffith University, I developed three products that fit the country's context - their traditional products, available skills, tools, and materials - and could be leveraged to create opportunities for their unemployed and under-employed. I presented these concepts to East Timor's Minister of Culture, and they are serving as a demonstration of the potential benefits that creating a design school in East Timor could have. The first product is a coconut grinder. (Click the images to see full size)

ABC Car Hood
During our fourth year at Humber, ABC Group of companies approached our class looking for new ideas to pitch to their clients (mostly auto manufacturers). Given the task of designing a lightweight car hood out of plastic, we managed to implement a system to protect pedestrians in vehicle-pedestrian collisions. We also designed a simple and convenient method to pour windshield fluid into its reservoir without popping the hood up.
In the event of a hard collision, a signal is sent to a compressed air cylinder, telling it to deploy (in a similar manner to airbag deployment systems). The released air causes a sealed pocket of the plastic hood to expand, which pushes the entire hood upwards. The expanding action, and the extra distance created between the hood and the engine, cushions the unfortunate pedestrian's head from colliding with the engine block.

Psion
Forklift operators around the world use Psion Teklogix computers for managing shipping and inventory in their warehouses. Psion approached Humber College students looking for an updated look to their line of vehicle-mounted computers.

Core77 1-hour design challenge - Gestural Interfaces
Got a little bored and decided to participate in Core77's newest 1-Hour design challenge
The theme is gestural interfaces, and the idea is to "create a simple but engaging interaction that does not rely on a screen for input or output. You are free to appropriate an everyday object or to create a unique piece of geometry, but your solution must invite the user to interact with information or their surroundings in a way that encourages discovery while delivering an element of performance."
More sketches
Decided to bust out the ol' black Bic and sketchpad... shake off some rust. Sorry, Kenny.
Byroglyphics style - self-portait and photoshop
I've been a fan of byroglyphics/ Russ Mills for some time now, and wanted to try my hand at something similar (but a little more colorful and less....violent?)
I've never done a self-portrait before, so I'm not sure how I feel about the result of the drawing, but the photoshopping was fun, and I've got a few ideas on how to get better results for next time.
Made some of my own textures/brushes for this with spray paint, toothbrushes, pavement... but had to borrow some from Brusheezy as well.
